In his annual letter to shareholders, Jeff Bezos announced in mid-April that Amazon Prime would reach 200 million members in Q1 2021. Most recently, Amazon reported in January 2020 that there were more than 150 million Prime membership customers. This translates to 33% growth in about a year. The majority of Prime customers are Americans: 73.5% of global members are from the US.

In Europe, too, Sponsored Display Audiences now also make it possible to select target groups in sponsored advertising on Amazon. Amazon provides ready-made audiences according to interests, lifestyle, life events, and in-market segments. Amazon has begun testing its “Manage Your Customer Engagement” tool in the United States. It allows registered brands to send emails to their followers. Customers who follow the brand may be sent promotional messages about new products and deals. Amazon does not make the customer data available for sellers, but wants to provide them with aggregated data about the performance of the emails.

Amazon is testing a premium service in the U.S. that will not only deliver ordered furniture and household appliances, but also unpack them, assemble them and take them back directly if the customer is dissatisfied. The aim is presumably to position the company against competitors such as Wayfair, Best Buy and Home Depot, which already offer similar services. If the service will launch in Europe as well, Amazon would put Ikea under enormous pressure.

Alibaba makes getting started on Tmall and Taobao easier

In order to attract even more merchants to its online marketplaces Tmall and Taobao, Alibaba is reducing some entry barriers and expanding both service and advice for merchants. For example, a store can be opened with one click in less than five minutes now. The verification process has been simplified and the option of one-on-one customer support service for merchants is offered on both platforms.

As of April 30, 2021, the NIS template for listing new products on Amazon will no longer be available to vendors. New items will then have to be entered via the Vendor Self-Service Catalog. According to Amazon, the VSSC offers improved and clearer product management.
