Amazon Pharmacy: Order medicines online in the US

Amazon has opened its online pharmacy Amazon Pharmacy in the US. Customers can order medicines there – even prescription drugs. Amazon is thus venturing into a very competitive market in the USA and is competing with traditional pharmacies and other large companies selling medicines such as Walmart.

Record sales at Alibaba’s Singles Day

Alibaba extended the largest Chinese shopping event, which normally lasts 24 hours, to a duration of 12 days this year – following Amazon’s strategy. Before the end of the event, the platform already exceeded a turnover of $56 billion. Alibaba expects at least a doubling of last year’s sales on Singles Day.

Walmart exceeds expected sales in Q3

Walmart’s sales also increased, although this was not related to any particular event. In Q3, the American online retailer was able to benefit from the pandemic-related growth in e-commerce and increased its sales by 79%. With sales of $134.7 billion, Walmart exceeded its own targets.

Online sales increase by 21% in the US during the Holiday Season

63% of Americans avoid shopping in stores according to a study from October – with the result that online trade is booming. In the first 10 days of the Holiday Season, almost $22 billion were spent shopping online in the USA. Most customers make the decision to shop online out of concern for their health.

Amazon expands garage delivery in the US

To simplify the problem of last mile delivery when customers are not at home, Amazon delivers packages to garages in 4,000 American cities. While Amazon brings many features to Europe a little later, garage delivery is hardly imaginable here: European cities are usually much more densely populated and very few people even have a garage.

Black Friday in France postponed

Due to the nationwide lockdown, Black Friday was postponed for stationary trade in France. Now, Amazon France also joined in and set December 4 as the new date for its sales event. Amazon wants to be fair to the stores, which are not allowed to reopen before December 1 when the lockdown will most likely be over.

Comment: Sponsored Display Audiences

Amazon launched Sponsored Display Audiences in the US. Sellers and vendors now have the option of targeting their sponsored display ads to a specific audience. They can also use them to re-target customers who have visited the PDP but have not made a purchase in the last 30 days. Especially the retargeting could add value here – besides the fact that the campaigns can now be completely controlled by the vendors themselves.

Changes we observed

No more replication of advertisements necessary: Since the beginning of November, it has been possible to place your own Amazon Ad on several marketplaces simultaneously with just one click.

More weight for user-generated content on the PDP: In the USA, there is now a video module on the PDP level. This contains video content from the provider as well as evaluation videos uploaded by customers. Video reviews thus increase significantly in visibility and importance.
