We are curious to see if this will change the strategic direction of the e-commerce giant. On LinkedIn this week, Remazing’s Managing Director Emil Beck shared his two theses on the subject matter.

Furthermore, we present our Prime Day analysis in this newsletter: What are the results of the sales event in 2021? Did deals pay off for merchants on the marketplace? In which country did the sales increase the most during Prime Day? Remazing’s Partner Filip Egert provides the answers in his comment.

Chinese Amazon competitor Alibaba also just had a successful sales event: “6.18” even surpassed Prime Day in size and duration.

General Updates

Amazon acquires the streaming rights for the “Ligue 1”

Amazon has purchased the streaming rights for the French “League 1” for €250 million. The contract runs from August 2021 for the duration of 3 years. 80% of French soccer matches will then be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. So far, Amazon Prime has only 10 million subscribers in France – presumably increasing this number is one of the reasons for acquiring the streaming rights.

Amazon demands favorable shares from retailers

As has now become known, Amazon demands the right to purchase shares at a price below market value from some vendors when concluding contracts. This procedure has been common practice for years, but has recently been pushed more strongly again by Amazon. In this way, the e-commerce giant exploits its market power vis-à-vis its contract partners, who often do not dare to turn down the deals.

Amazon calls for US trade commission chief to withdraw from its case

If Amazon has its way, it wants the newly appointed head of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Lina Khan, to stay out of its investigation of Amazon’s competitive position. The company filed a motion to that effect, arguing that Khan was not neutral: she had drawn attention to herself years ago with an article highly critical of Amazon. Khan, on the other hand, assured her impartiality.

Alibaba’s shopping festival 6.18 with record numbers

The Alibaba Group also just held a very successful online shopping event: “6.18 Mid-Year Shopping Festival” took place from May 24 to June 20. On the most successful day, more than $46 million was turned over, and the number of participating brands and retailers more than doubled compared to last year. Revenue generated from livestreams also grew by 100%.

Rapid e-commerce growth in the UK

Due to the lockdown, e-commerce has also grown rapidly in the UK and currently accounts for nearly 30% of total commerce. It is expected that brick-and-mortar retail will make $11 billion less in sales by 2025 due to the shift to online shopping. European shoppers expect to shift 20% of their spendings for apparel, homeware and electrical goods to online operators.

What the new EU VAT reform means

On July 1, the new EU VAT reform came into force. It is intended to simplify cross-border trade within the EU and therefore affects all online retailers who sell across EU country borders. With the new regulation, for example, national thresholds for VAT have been standardized to the value of €10,000 turnover. etailment explains further changes here (in German).

Remazing Update

Remazing goes UK: New presence in London

Remazing opens up a new presence in London. The UK has long been an important market for Remazing – so we decided to provide even better local support for our customers. In the near future, London will be the second official Remazing office outside of our headquarters in Hamburg. We are looking forward to this big milestone!

What caught our attention

In Seller Central on the European marketplaces (except for amazon.pl), A/B tests are finally available for the product title and the main image. This allows two different versions to be tested against each other in terms of different metrics. The long-awaited feature already allows testing of A+ content, title, and image in the US.

There is a new Vine program for vendors on Amazon. In the new system, Amazon handles the shipping of previously registered products to testers from its own warehouse, and the vendor itself no longer has to worry about this. One disadvantage of this process: A completely new product cannot be registered with Vine if it is not yet in Amazon’s inventory.

Amazon plans to launch a new marketplace in Egypt in early November 2021. In some other countries, especially in the most recently added marketplaces, Amazon is gradually rolling out its advertising options: Sponsored Ads will launch on the Swedish marketplace in late July, on the Polish marketplace in late September, and on the Turkish marketplace in early November.

Remdash: Suppressed ASINs

With Remdash you can identify what we call „Suppressed ASINs“, which is basically your products that match the following criteria:

  • you still have stock available for a product showing in Brand Analytics
  • in the Buybox, it shows the product as „Temporarily out of stock“ or „Currently unavailable“

Top 5 Amazon Keywords

These are the top 5 most searched keywords by country from June 27 to July 3, 2021. Keywords related to COVID-19 are highlighted in red.

In the UK, masks were again searched for on Amazon as the Corona case numbers increased; in all other countries, the pandemic did not affect the top search terms. Instead, stress-relieving fidget toys like “Pop it” are on the rise. In the US in particular, the influence of Prime Day is also clear: Here, Amazon shoppers increasingly searched for expensive devices and presumably hoped for deals.
