Some other news that made the e-commerce industry take notice over the past two weeks: In addition to the planned launch of new marketplaces in Africa and South America, Amazon is reportedly expanding its luxury brand offerings in Europe. In addition, the company has announced that, after a long development period, the first drone deliveries of goods are finally being tested, and that shoes can now also be tried on virtually.

Other online marketplaces are also developing steadily: JD.com has announced the launch of its own grocery delivery service and Walmart is attracting brands and retailers from Great Britain to its platform in the USA.

Updates: Amazon

New Amazon marketplaces in Africa and South America

Amazon is planning to launch new marketplaces in Nigeria, South Africa, Chile and Colombia, according to media reports. It is believed that all countries will have their own local marketplace and also access to Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) services. Moreover, the Prime membership programme will also be implemented in the new markets. Since Amazon’s latest expansion plans became public, the share prices of African e-commerce company Jumia fell by almost 10% and those of Argentine marketplace leader MercadoLibre by more than 7%.

Amazon’s range of luxury brands to be further expanded in Europe

Following the successful launch of the “Luxury Stores at Amazon” in autumn 2020, Amazon is now planning to expand its range of higher-priced products within the clothing and beauty segments. While products in this category were previously only available in the US, customers in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the UK will now also be able to take advantage of the steadily growing range of luxury brands that are available on the platform.

Amazon invites influencers to luxury resorts

Last month, Amazon invited a group of Instagram, TikTok and YouTube stars to a glamorous resort in Mexico. The event was aimed at members of Amazon’s Influencer Program, which was launched in 2017 and allows people to earn money by promoting the company’s products on social media platforms. This year, Amazon has already organised similar events in New York and Los Angeles as the company hopes to attract more influencers to the program.

Will there be a second Prime Day this year?

After Amazon announced that its Prime Day will take place this year on 12 and 13 July, the company is already inviting some sellers to a new Prime Day-like sales event, according to media reports. This additional deal event will probably take place later this year and should give Amazon a much-needed boost in sales. The company, like many other players in the e-commerce industry, is currently struggling with slower growth.

Amazon could escape antitrust fine through deal with EU

For almost three years, antitrust proceedings have been ongoing against Amazon in the EU, which among other things concern the handling of retailer data and buybox awards. Now there is a possibility of a settlement if Amazon agrees to share selected data of its merchants with all sellers. The move would fall under the recently passed Digital Markets Act, pre-empting a fine for its current actions.

Amazon introduces virtual shoe try-on and drone delivery

Customers can now digitally try on thousands of shoe styles with the new mobile “Virtual Try-On for Shoes” feature, which is currently only available on iOS. In the small Californian town of Lockeford, customers could even order shoes and other products via drone delivery to their backyard later this year. The company’s own drone delivery service called “Prime Air” is finally to be launched on a trial basis after a long development period.

Updates: Other Marketplaces

JD.com launches grocery delivery service

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com is set to enter the grocery delivery market. The service will initially be launched in cities such as Zhengzhou. The business expansion is presumably part of the group’s strategy to cut losses that was announced for 2022. After posting a net loss of US$800 million in 2021, the company aims to improve its performance by downsizing loss-making businesses, among other measures.

Walmart is courting UK sellers for its US marketplace

Walmart is continuing its efforts to attract international sellers to its online marketplace in the US, extending invitations to sellers from the UK. The UK sellers will be able to benefit from tools and services such as Walmart’s Fulfillment Services. The retail giant aims to attract 40,000 new sellers to its platform this year. Walmart also plans to expand its marketplace assortment to over 200 million items.

What caught our attention: Prime Day Special

In preparation for Prime Day, we recommend adding promotional headlines in Sponsored Brand campaigns. Important: Merchants must follow Amazon’s guidelines for promotional messages! Campaigns are only allowed to have promotional messages if all promoted products have a live Amazon offer.

Generally, Amazon allows promotional messages in the headlines when they meet certain criteria. These include for example that the start and end dates of your advertising campaign must reflect the duration of the offer or promotion. Furthermore, superlatives such as “Big Savings” or “Great Discounts” must be omitted. We recommend checking Amazon’s guidelines regarding promotional and seasonal messages once again as part of the preparations for Prime Day 2022.

Remdash: Suppressed ASINs

With Remdash, so-called “Suppressed ASINs” can be identified, i.e. products that meet the following criteria:

  • There is an available stock for the product, which is displayed in Brand Analytics.
  • In the Buybox, the product is displayed as “temporarily out of stock” or “currently unavailable”.
